About Triggers

Below you will find the answers to the most frequently asked questions about the phenomenon of triggers. We answer why you react the way you do, why someone triggers you, and how you change this automatism into a conscious choice.

I feel like I lose control in a split second.

Your experience is frustratingly common, and you are right, it often has little to do with willpower. What you are describing is a textbook example of being triggered, the Amygdala Hijack.

Here is what is happening:

  • It's Not You, it's how your brain works: Your brain is equipped with a super-fast emotional alarm system called the Amygdala. Its job is to detect danger and initiate a survival response (fight, flight, or freeze) in milliseconds.
  • The Problem of Speed: When a small stimulus occurs (like a critical tone, a certain look, or even an inconvenience), the Amygdala often intercepts the information and fires the alarm before the signal reaches your Prefrontal Cortex (the rational, thinking part of your brain).
  • Misinterpreting "Nothing": Your subconscious brain may be misinterpreting the "nothing" (the small stimulus) as a major danger because it links it to an old, unresolved threat (perhaps from childhood, or a stressful period). When this alarm goes off, your whole system goes into emergency mode, causing the intense and sudden anger that feels like a total loss of control.

The take-away: It's not a moral failing; it's a biological overreaction where your primitive survival mechanism overrides your logical mind. The goal is to teach your brain that the small stimulus is no longer a five-alarm fire.

It feels like the topic changes, but the fight is always identical.

When my partner is already triggered...

I.e. catastrophic forecasting, resorting to threats, kitchen sinking, resort to a personal attack, giving the silent treatment or using generalized labeling.
