About Triggers

Below you will find the answers to the most frequently asked questions about the phenomenon of triggers. We answer why you react the way you do, why someone triggers you, and how you change this automatism into a conscious choice.

I feel like I lose control in a split second.

I need a way to hit the brakes in the moment.

It feels like the topic changes, but the fight is always identical.

What is this?

This is the Freeze Response, a crucial part of the Amygdala’s defensive playbook. If the nervous system perceives the danger as too overwhelming to fight or flee, it will choose to shut down and play dead.

  • The Biological Shutdown: The Freeze Response is a primal mechanism designed to make you inconspicuous. Your prefrontal cortex (rational mind) and your speech centers temporarily go offline. You feel stuck, detached, and your mind goes blank because your body is using its resources for physical defense, not complex thought.
  • The Solution: Break the Physical Tension: Since the "Freeze" is a physical state of extreme tension and immobility, the solution is to introduce intentional movement to signal safety to your nervous system.
    • Stand Up: If you are sitting, stand up. This simple change breaks the rigid posture.
    • Shake It Out: Shake your hands and arms briefly, or gently stamp your feet. This helps discharge the pent-up survival energy trapped in your muscles.
    • Change Focus: Move your eyes around the room. Look at objects and name them silently (e.g., "blue chair," "wooden desk"). This engages the visual processing part of your brain and pulls you out of the emotional loop.

The take-away: The blank mind is your body protecting you. By safely breaking the physical stillness, you can reboot your rational brain and regain your ability to speak.
