The IPIP contains hundreds of items and is often used as an alternative to commercial tests such as the NEO-PI-R. It is a scientifically based method for gaining insight into a person's personality in a reliable and valid way.
The five basic dimensions of the IPIP test (Big Five or OCEAN)
- Openness to Experience
High scores indicate curiosity, creativity, and openness to new ideas. Low scores indicate practicality, traditionalism, and less openness to change. - Conscientiousness
People with high scores are organized, reliable, and goal-oriented. They complete tasks carefully. A low score indicates impulsiveness and being less structured. - Extraversion
People with a high score are sociable, energetic, and talkative. They get energy from interactions and are often optimistic. A low score indicates introversion: quiet, reserved, and preferring to be alone or in small groups. - Agreeableness
High scores mean that someone is warm, friendly, and easygoing. They are cooperative and empathetic. Low scores may indicate critical, less easygoing, and direct behavior. - Emotional Stability / Neuroticism
High scores on emotional stability mean calm, resilient, and less sensitive to stress. Low scores (high neuroticism) indicate emotional vulnerability, irritability, and worry.
